Charlie and a Bird Named Sparkyis the title of the first children’s book written by Charles Lutz. It tells the tale of a boy befriending an orphaned bird. It is based on a true story. The book is currently available with story board illustrations as it awaits final illustrations and publishing. Take a look at the following excerpts from the book:
Charlie had learned that hawks, falcons and other birds of prey could be trained to land on your arm, so he decided to give it a try!He held out his arm and clicked his fingers. To his amazement, the little bird flew right to him!Charlie was delighted to have a new friend.
Charlie had studied birds in school and at home, and he saw that this little bird was an American Kestrel (that’s it’s fancy name); it’s more commonly known as a Sparrow Hawk.
Psalm 104:24 “How many are Your works, O Lord!In wisdom You have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures”
The following day, Charlie and the little orphaned bird met again in the park.Charlie’s sister, Annie, called the little Sparrow Hawk “Sparky”.It seemed to fit him perfectly, so Sparky he became!
Isaiah 43:1 “I, the Lord, have summoned you by name; you are mine”
Every morning Sparky would be waiting to greet Charlie. When Charlie walked onto his front porch, Sparky would zoom from the fence in the park straight to Charlie’s arm. After enjoying whatever snack Charlie brought out, Sparky would climb right up onto Charlie’s shoulder or even the top of his head!
As Sparky grew he learned to fly with grace and beauty. He could glide, hover, swoop, turn on a dime, and of course, he was very, very fast!
Isaiah 40:31 “Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on wings like eagles”

During creation, His Spirit filled the water; He spoke the word and the stars had their birth. He spoke the word and He made the field flourish; He spoke His words of life everywhere. He spoke the word and creatures filled the ocean; He spoke the word and the birds took to the air. He gave the breath of life to a man and his wife and said take care of the earth.
Now the world’s long since fallen, but the Father is still callin’, callin’ us home, callin’ us home.
He speaks His word and life is still created, and by His word we live and move and breath. He sends His word and it brings to Him a harvest. He gives His word a lamp unto our feet.
Now the world’s long since fallen, but the Father is still callin’, callin’ us home, callin’ us home. Come home.
The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, callin’ us home, callin’ us home. Come home.
O Great Spirit, Heavenly Father, You are love. You are love and You call us all home.
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth…and God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good…though the wages of sin be death, yet the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord…the Lord says, “In time I will gather you; in time I will bring you home.” (The Bible: Genesis 1:1; Romans 6:23; Zephaniah 3:20)
There comes a scene awakening on the horizon in the sky. It fills up the air, you can see everywhere that it’s thrilling, let it shine! The sun’s sinkin’ low and its splendor is shone. Did you ever wonder why the colors are formed from the violets to orange? It’s a painting in the sky; shine. The sounds in the trees make a quiet symphony, there’s a message being told, as the brook next to me adds a soft harmony, peaceful music to behold.
These are the sights and the sounds of the crystal blue evening, these are the sights and the sounds at the closing of day. Oh, how the twilight is still, there’s a hush as it lingers. Behold the sights and the sounds of the crystal blue evening.
The first evening star faintly shines from afar. It seems lonely, but it knows when it’s joined by the rest of the heavens’ vastness it’s a part of heaven’s show; shine. There’s a feeling that starts growing deep in my heart, it surrounds me where I lie, and there’s no need to hide from the comfort inside, yes I’m happy, God is nigh.
These are the sights and the sounds of the crystal blue evening, these are the sights and the sounds at the closing of day. Oh, how the twilight is still, there’s a hush as it lingers. Behold the sights and the sounds of the crystal blue evening.
I found a brand new feeling; it comes when you’re around. It’s one that says I’m happy and takes away my frown, and now I’ve solved the mystery of how friends come to be; they’re bound by special meanings - the things you cannot see; but I can still recall the time when I first saw your smile and how it warmed a place here in my heart, and though the day was long ago it seems like yesterday. It’s nice to know a smile can’t fade away.
Well, I wish I could be a friend (could be a friend) who does and says it all (who does it all); the kind that is unfailing to catch you when you fall (catch you when you fall); to love just like my Master (the Lord is love), to give and understand, well, that’s the love I’m learning (I know He’s teaching me along the way), and I know He holds my hand. You’re my friend forever and I’ll tell you that it’s true, ’cause God’s the great provider of friends. We’ll stay close together, and I love you through and through, and though I don’t deserve it He gave a very special friend in you.
